April 7 2011

Starz Animation Toronto and Multiple Media Entertainment (MME) are set to produce a stereoscopic 3D version of The Wizard of Oz, working from a script by Workaholics co-creator Connor Pritchard.

The film is budgeted at US$20m and will be exec produced by Michael Taylor and Drew Craig of MME, building on the recent success of Starz's Gnomeo & Juliet.

Starz was "undeniably the place to go for world-class production talent and experience to execute on such an internationally known and beloved property as Oz," said Taylor

The project, working titled Oz3D, is described as "a humorous and contemporary adaptation" of L Frank Baum's classic book.

Starz Animation's Rob Silvestri will direct, working from a script by Pritchard, whose office sitcom Workaholics premiered on Wednesday on Comedy Central.

Worldwide distribution will be handled by MME, which has already closed a deal with Gigapix Releasing for the US, securing a minimum commitment of US$10m for a theatrical release on a minimum 1,000 screens.
